Dog Training

About the Training
Dogs tend to do whatever is most rewarding. Our goal as pet owners is to make the most desirable behaviors the most rewarding. This develops a dog that is happy to learn and cooperate. The most satisfying pet relationships have mutual trust and respect. We create this relationship through a positive, enriching environment, with clear and reasonable boundaries.

Getting Started
Training starts with a 60 - 90 minute evaluation. This is my opportunity to get to know you and your pet's specific needs and goals. We practice basic reinforcement techniques and settle on a set of simple exercises you can practice on your own. There may be some environmental adjustments that will make managing your pet's behavior easier. A bit of homework informs how we move forward.
Initial visits can be house calls or meetings in a public space. Traveling to a dog friendly park in my area earns you a discount.

Moving Forward
Training options vary as widely as pet families. My general goal is to teach you to train your own pet. A common pattern is to meet once every week or two for a series of three to four visits. This gives the owner time to practice, have successes, and formulate questions. Keep in mind that your dog needs consistency, but I work to stay flexible for individual schedules.
Some circumstances require a little extra help. Very busy schedules or complex behavior problems benefit from a personalized training plan. I work individually with your dog on a pre-approved plan and meet with you once weekly to transfer technique and demonstrate progress. This can help jump start a positive change. Keep in mind that you will still have to practice and be responsible for your dog's behavior. Edited session videos are an option for owners that would like to see our training in action. Prices vary based on behavior, travel time, training time, and optional videos or written reports.

Other challenges have a simple solution and that is exercise, exercise, exercise. No matter the size, some dogs simply have more energy than we are capable of providing an outlet for. Whether it is an issue of time or ability, owners sometimes need help burning off some of that excess canine energy. Exercise benefits the body and mind, can alleviate boredom and stress, mitigates destructive behaviors, and may improve trainability. Dogs need enrichment, and for some, nothing is better than physical activity. Options range from basic walks, to biking, to dog park visits. I can't replace quality time with you, but I can supplement it.
